Botox is a common cosmetic treatment. Due to its widely available nature, it’s also the subject of many rumors and myths. Here at Matthews Internal Medicine, our Med Spa can help you figure out which kinds of treatments work best for you. We can help you bust those Botox myths and see if this medical procedure is just what you need.
You’ll Have “Frozen Face”
One of the most prevalent myths about Botox is that it freezes your face, rendering you unable to make any kind of normal facial expression. This was even a common joke in TV shows and movies for a bit, lending to the longevity of this myth. Fortunately, you can actually get Botox injections and still perform an entire range of facial expressions without a problem.
Injections Are Painful
Most patients experience only minor discomfort when getting Botox injections. You might feel a pinch, but usually an anesthetic ensures that you’re not going to have to suffer when getting a Botox injection at our medical spa.
Botox is Toxic
The FDA has evaluated Botox over and over again in the last two decades. It’s been approved for a variety of medical and cosmetic applications. The typical dose given for a cosmetic Botox procedure is nowhere near toxic levels. You would have to inject something like 100 times the average dose to worry about toxicity.
Botox Can Give You Botulism
This is another myth about Botox injections and their safety. Botox is a purified protein made from botulism toxin, but that does not make it the same thing. It’s not a toxin that will spread through your system, like botulism. It stays at the injection site and it’s been designed to be safe for cosmetic treatments.
Botox is Addictive
Some people believe that Botox is addictive and that if you go for one treatment that you’ll be hooked into an expensive habit for life. That’s simply not true. While you may want to continue getting treatments due to the positive effect that injections have on your face, there is nothing addictive about Botox itself.
People That Work Out Need More Botox
Your workout routine won’t affect how much Botox you need in a given treatment. Factors that affect this procedure include the thickness of your face muscles, genetics, and sun exposure levels, but your time spent at the gym doesn’t really factor in. It’s certainly not true that you’ll need much more Botox just because you work out more frequently than another patient. We’ll evaluate a variety of health factors and find the dosage that works for you.
Botox Can Get Rid of Any Facial Lines
Unfortunately, Botox can’t treat every kind of wrinkle or facial line. It’s specifically designed to treat “dynamic” wrinkles. These develop from movement over time. Botox relaxes the muscles, lessening their appearance. There are also “static” wrinkles that arise from aging or sun exposure, and Botox treatments won’t smooth these out. There are other treatments that might work for you though.
